Romans 8:38-39
“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Unconditional love is a term often heard today. The best model for unconditional love is the love of God, especially as expressed in Christ Jesus. Can that love be taken away? Paul responds that nothing in all of creation “will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
Who do you love most in the world? Is it your spouse? A girlfriend or boyfriend? A child? A parent? Someone else? God has chosen to love you. He is not required to love you. He chooses to love you. Because He has chosen to love you, nothing can remove you from His love. Nothing in the spiritual realm (angels nor demons), nothing in time (present or future), nothing in the realm of traditional spirituality (powers), nothing in the spatial realm (height nor depth) – in fact nothing in all creation can separate those of us who know Christ as Savior from the love of God.
Growing in the Lord begins with the following:
- We must be certain of our salvation.
- We must be assured that God loves us.
The Bible teaches us that no external force can break God’s love for us. The only danger is that we harden our hearts and don’t perceive the love that is always waiting for us. Stay in tune with God, and you will continuously see evidence of God’s love.

I have had such difficult conversations on this topic lately. The person could not receive the Bible as God’s word, or a love that asked anything of us at all (their definition of unconditional), yet a deeply spiritual person who I believe was saved as a child through Jesus.
